FOR PEOPLE BUILDING THEIR CAREERS
Things I wish someone taught me before my first job
Nobody really teaches you how to work.
How to organise what you're doing. How to keep track of what needs to happen. How to follow up. How to communicate progress. How to manage several things at once without letting something quietly disappear.
Over the years, I've built little systems to help me do exactly that — first for myself, and then for people I've worked with along the way.
These are some of the trackers, tools, and ways of working I've used while running my own business and managing commercial projects.
I'm putting them here in case they make work a little easier for you too.
Commercial Operations Starter Kit
Get-Things-Done Board - The simple work system I used with my interns and part-timers.
I originally built this board so the people working with me always had somewhere to come back to.What needs to happen? What matters today? What's already in progress? What's stuck? What have I finished? It gave us one place to keep work visible — especially when there were multiple projects, clients, deadlines, and little things that were easy to forget.Years later, one of the interns I'd worked with asked if I could teach her how to set up the same kind of system for her current work. That made me realise that what had stayed with her wasn't Trello. It was having a system she could rely on.So I'm sharing mine here.Use it as a reference. Come back when work gets messy. Borrow the parts that help, ignore the ones that don't, and change it as your work changes.I've also left some of the resources I used with my interns and part-timers inside the board for you to use — and I'll keep adding more as I find the ones worth passing on.The goal isn't to manage the board perfectly. It's to have somewhere you can always go to figure out what happens next.A look inside the system.See how I set mine upExplore my Get Things Done board →Open the cards, read the instructions, explore the resources I've left inside, and borrow whatever helps. The board also includes guides and working resources I used with the people working with me.Want to build your own?Start with Trello's Team Action Items template →This is where I started. Mine evolved from there as I figured out what we actually needed.
